Glary Wu | The Sun

Art Projects Gallery is proud to present Hong Kong artist Glary Wu Hoi Yan’s Solo Exhibition “The Sun”.

Glary Wu (b.1996, Hong Kong) is a contemporary Hong Kong artist. She graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Visual Art degree in 2019.

Wu transforms the familiarity of daily life into an expressive painting language that through her works, connects her and the society. The artist finds inspiration from easily overlooked details from daily life, as well as from writers, sociologists, and even the strangers that she photographs. Creative sparks from her multidisciplinary approach inspires Wu to express both the tangible and intangible aspects of emotions through her works in a poetic way.

In Wu’s paintings, reality imitates theatre, including sceneries and different people; the dialogue between elements and characters in the same space is key, adding a dash of imagination in pieces, to accentuate the human mind through static surroundings and changing sceneries.

Artist’s Statement

My life intertwined with the Sun the day my parents gifted me my name - the Chinese character “昕” in my name means dawn - , along with the embrace of warmth, hope, and dreams.

The Sun coats us in different warmths depending on the season, humidity, hour of day and place. You may not see her; but you will feel her. From sunrise to sunset; in the city or out in nature; the same scenery basking in different glows, is perhaps the theater that the Sun performs every day and her source of entertainment. How can one give off any warmth without truly enjoying the embrace of the Sun?

I would like to invite the audience to experience this exhibition with their favourite colour-tinted glasses, as I share my Sun-inspired epiphanies about time and space through a collection through sunrise and sunset.

“The Sun” exhibition runs from 20 Aug 2022 to 8 Oct 2022 at Art Projects Gallery.
